The former Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has issued a strong warning against the negative portrayal and demarcation of Nigeria, stressing that such ill comments are damaging the nation’s tourism prospects. Speaking on Thursday at the launch of the Eko Tourism Foundation (ETF), Mohammed emphasized that Nigeria is often unfairly labeled as unsafe, a mischaracterization that is severely limiting tourism opportunities in the country.
Mohammed acknowledged that Nigeria does face challenges but pointed out that no country is without problems. He noted the stark contrast between the global perception of Nigeria, or Lagos in particular, and the reality on the ground. “If you read about Nigeria before you come to Nigeria, or you read about Lagos before you come to Lagos, you will think they are two different places,” he remarked.
As Chairman of the ETF Board of Trustees, Mohammed described the foundation as a bold initiative aimed at transforming Lagos into Africa’s leading tourism hub. He called on Nigerians and international observers alike to foster a more positive image of the country, which will in turn unlock its vast tourism potential.
Despite challenges, Mohammed urged restraint in spreading negative narratives that could discourage tourism investors and visitors. He advocated for a balanced approach that recognizes Nigeria’s progress and opportunities for growth in the tourism sector.
