Lagos Taskforce Arrests 3 More ‘Omotaku’ Hoodlums in Ongoing Highway Sweep

​LAGOS — The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Taskforce has intensified its war against highway extortion, apprehending three more suspected hoodlums, popularly known as ‘omotaku,’ for harassing motorists.

​The suspects were arrested on Thursday at two separate high-traffic locations: the Palmgrove bus stop along the Ikorodu Road axis and the Oniru area on Lagos Island. The group is notorious for preying on vulnerable drivers, particularly those whose vehicles have developed mechanical faults or broken down on the road.

​Confirming the development on Friday, the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated via his official X handle that the operatives moved in following reports of the suspects forcibly attacking their victims.

​”Yesterday, April 2nd, 2026, operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce continued with the arrest of hoodlums attacking unsuspecting drivers with broken-down vehicles. Three suspects were arrested at two different locations for forcibly attacking their victims. Suspects will be charged to court accordingly,” Wahab stated.

​A Pattern of Harassment

​This latest enforcement action follows a similar sting operation earlier in the week. In that instance, taskforce operatives intervened at Marwa Bus Stop in Lekki, where a truck driver was being threatened by hoodlums demanding his mobile phone, cash, and vehicle parts such as the battery and jack.

​The ‘omotaku’ menace has become a significant concern for Lagos residents. These individuals often pose as “area boys” or faux-mechanics, using intimidation to extort exorbitant sums of money from stranded commuters under the guise of providing “security” or unauthorized towing services.

​Government Pledges Sustained Enforcement

​The Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, has reportedly placed several identified hotspots under 24-hour surveillance. Commissioner Wahab reaffirmed the state’s zero-tolerance policy toward such activities, emphasizing that the crackdown is part of a broader “Zero Tolerance Lagos” campaign.

​”We remain committed to keeping our roads safe, protecting motorists, and eliminating all forms of harassment and intimidation across Lagos. Enforcement operations will continue across identified hotspots to maintain order and security,” Wahab assured.

​The arrested suspects are expected to be arraigned before the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Oshodi in the coming days.
