Lagos Sensitises Residents on New Organ Harvesting, Consumer Protection Laws

​The Lagos State Government has concluded a three-day intensive legislative sensitisation tour across its three senatorial districts, aimed at bridging the gap between governance and civic awareness. Led by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE), the initiative focused on educating residents about three pivotal new laws: the Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplant Law 2024, the Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law 2024, and the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law 2024.

​The grand finale, held at the Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including artisans, market leaders, and youth representatives. Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of OPL&CE, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, emphasized that the Sanwo-Olu administration is committed to ensuring every Lagosian understands the legal frameworks governing their daily lives.

​Understanding the New Legal Frameworks

​The sensitisation highlighted several key legislative updates designed to protect the rights of Lagos residents:

​1.Human Organ Harvesting & Tissue Transplant Law 2024: This law was enacted to curb illegal medical practices and the burgeoning black market for human organs. It sets strict guidelines for transplants, ensuring ethical compliance and safeguarding vulnerable citizens from exploitation.

2.Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law 2024: A major step forward for the judiciary, this law provides a safety net for those who testify in criminal cases, aiming to eliminate the fear of retribution and improve the conviction rate for serious crimes.

3.Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) Law 2024: This update strengthens the powers of LASCOPA to intervene in disputes between consumers and service providers, ensuring residents get “value for money.”

​Grassroots Engagement and Feedback

​The Executive Chairman of Isolo LCDA, Hon. Adebayo Olasoju (represented by Hon. Abiola Ayinde Marshal), lauded the initiative as a “bridge” between the government and the governed. He noted that such platforms empower residents to seek redress through official channels rather than resorting to self-help.

​During the interactive session, residents voiced concerns ranging from arbitrary electricity billing and scavenger activities to road infrastructure and flooding. Engr. Shasore assured the audience that their feedback is not just documented but is used to guide future policy decisions and is escalated to the relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
