The Lagos State Police Command has taken decisive action by disbanding one of its tactical squads following a viral video that showed officers assaulting a motorist during a stop-and-search operation. The incident, which took place recently, involved police operatives attempting to forcibly remove the motorist’s glasses, suspected of having a hidden camera feature. The confrontation escalated, culminating in one officer striking the motorist.
In response to the backlash, Police Spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the immediate detention of all officers involved in the squad. The officers are set to face an orderly room trial according to established disciplinary procedures to ensure swift and transparent justice.
Furthermore, the implicated Tactical Squad has been completely dissolved. A newly constituted unit will replace it, composed of officers committed to adhering strictly to international best practices in policing, with an emphasis on dignity, human rights, and zero tolerance for corruption.
The Nigeria Police Force has also condemned the conduct of the officers involved and assured the public that appropriate disciplinary actions are underway. The Lagos State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to serving the public with integrity and fairness, urging residents to continue cooperating with law enforcement and report any misconduct through official channels.

This action comes amid ongoing efforts by the Lagos Police to maintain public trust and ensure accountability within its ranks after a disturbing display of police misconduct was exposed on social media, igniting public calls for reform and justice.
The new Tactical Squad formed will operate under higher standards designed to protect citizen rights and restore confidence in the Lagos State Police service.
