In a proactive move to combat human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and the escalating challenge of irregular migration dubbed the “Japa Syndrome,” Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations (MoSD&IGR), joined forces with relevant Federal Government agencies to organize a sensitization program targeted at public servants. The event, held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa-Ikeja, brought together key stakeholders to discuss the perils of trafficking and unsafe migration and emphasize the role of public servants in safeguarding themselves and the wider community.

The sensitization, themed “Partnership for Protection: Safeguarding Public Servants Against Trafficking and Unsafe Migration,” highlighted the growing concern over the Japa Syndrome—a term describing the alarming rate of youth and professionals fleeing Nigeria for better opportunities abroad, often through irregular and risky means. The program underscored the significance of awareness and preventive actions to protect citizens from exploitation, forced labor, and other trafficking-related abuses.

This initiative complements broader efforts by the Federal Government, including the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which is intensifying strategies to dismantle trafficking networks and secure migratory routes. Recent collaborative projects with international partners, such as France and Italy, emphasize capacity building, operational support, and victim-centered interventions aimed at curtailing human trafficking in Nigeria.

The sensitization stressed the importance of partnership between state and federal entities to address the multidimensional aspects of trafficking and irregular migration. It also addressed the socio-economic factors fueling the Japa Syndrome, encouraging the government to invest in youth empowerment and skill development to provide viable alternatives to unsafe migration.

Through these combined efforts, Lagos State and its federal counterparts aim to foster a safer environment for public servants and youths alike, curtailing the tide of trafficking and irregular migration while preserving Nigeria’s human capital and national security.

This sensitization is part of an ongoing series of programmes nationwide, including youth-focused initiatives in Ogun State, illustrating the federal and state governments’ commitment to tackling the root causes of trafficking and migration crises in Nigeria.
