Lagos confirms arrest of man over viral video of toddler abuse in Ikorodu

IKORODU — The Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of a man captured on video abusing a toddler in the Ikorodu area of the state, a case that has ignited fresh outrage on social media and renewed calls for tougher child-protection enforcement.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations continue, with authorities yet to disclose the full circumstances under which the abuse occurred or the toddler’s current condition.

A troubling pattern in Ikorodu

This is far from an isolated case in the area. Ikorodu has featured repeatedly in Lagos’s child-abuse headlines in recent years.

Cases range from a teacher filmed assaulting a three-year-old pupil in a numeracy class, to a man arrested for defiling a neighbour’s infant, to a case involving a nine-year-old girl.

Each incident has followed a similar arc: a video goes viral, public pressure mounts rapidly, often amplified by social media activists, and the state moves to make an arrest within days.

The role of public pressure

Findings show that in comparable past cases, swift arrests have often come only after online activists gave schools or individuals public ultimatums, raising uncomfortable questions about how much institutional vigilance exists independent of viral outrage.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has, in previous statements on similar cases, insisted that the state maintains a zero-tolerance policy for abuse of children in any setting.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the child is expected to receive medical and psychological evaluation as part of standard procedure in such cases, while the suspect will likely be arraigned once the investigating team concludes its work.

Child rights advocates are expected to continue pressing for stronger, preventive safeguards rather than reactive arrests that only follow a viral moment. ValidViewNetwork reports.
