Lagos arraigns 17 for urinating, defecating in public

The Lagos State Government has arraigned 17 individuals over environmental offences of urinating and defecating in public places.

This development was revealed by the state Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on his official X page on Thursday.

The commissioner noted that the offenders were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade in Oshodi part of the state for urinating and defecating in public places and were found guilty.

He said, “Today, 17 environmental offenders apprehended by Lawma_gov operatives were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, for urinating and defecating in public places.

“The court found the defendants guilty and sentenced each offender to pay a fine of N40,000 or serve one month imprisonment.”, he added.

He also used the opportunity to remind Lagos residents that open urination and defecation remain environmental offenses in the state as they affect the public health of the residents.

He said, “Let this serve as a clear reminder that open urination and defecation are environmental offences and serious public health risks. Lagos State will continue to enforce sanitation laws firmly to protect public health, preserve human dignity, and maintain order in our communities.

“We urge residents to make use of available public sanitation facilities and comply with environmental regulations. Cleanliness is a shared responsibility.”, he added.
