Ijebu Ode, Ogun State – Chief Sony Kuku, the revered Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, has officially taken on the significant role of Regent Awujale, becoming the highest-ranking traditional figure within the Awujale’s Palace. This development comes at a critical time for Ijebuland, following the recent passing of the paramount ruler, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who reigned for a remarkable 65 years until his demise on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Chief Kuku, who also holds the prestigious titles of Olor’ogun of Ijebu Ode and Asiwaju of the Balogun Kuku Dynasty, is widely recognized for his profound leadership, cultural acumen, and dedicated service to the community. His assumption of the regency is crucial as the Ijebu Kingdom prepares for the selection of the next Awujale, a process that is expected to commence after the official mourning period for Oba Adetona.
The selection of a new Awujale will adhere to the rotational system among the four ruling houses of Ijebuland: Gbelegbuwa, Anikinaiya, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote. The process, governed by the Chiefs Law of 1957, involves nominations from the respective ruling houses and consensus among the kingmakers (Afobaje). It is understood that the next Awujale is expected to emerge from the Fusengbuwa ruling house.
While Chief Kuku takes on the responsibilities of the regency, it’s important to note the traditional roles during an interregnum. Historically, the Olisa of Ijebu Ode assumes the de facto leadership until a new Awujale is installed. However, in this instance, the prominent role of Ogbeni Oja, held by Chief Kuku, signifies his significant influence and trust within the traditional council. The Ogbeni Oja position, while not hereditary or royal, holds precedence over other chiefs in the Awujale’s palace and traditionally acts on behalf of the Awujale during periods of vacancy.
Oba Adetona’s burial, conducted according to Islamic rites on Monday, July 14, 2025, at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, was attended by various dignitaries and Islamic leaders. The monarch’s passing marks the end of an era and ushers in a new chapter for Ijebuland, with Chief Kuku at the helm of the traditional administration during this transitional phase.
