LAGOS — It was a gathering of Nigeria’s political and corporate titans at the MUSON Centre on Thursday, as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo led a high-profile audience to celebrate the retirement of Mr. Kenny Ezenwani Odogwu, the long-standing Chairman of Royal Exchange Plc.

After nearly three decades on the board—19 of those years at the helm as Group Chairman—Odogwu’s exit marks the end of a transformative era for one of Nigeria’s oldest financial institutions. Under his stewardship, Royal Exchange evolved from a composite insurer into a diversified holding company with interests spanning insurance, healthcare, and finance.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Tajudeen Alao Mahmud, described Odogwu’s legacy as a “testament to stability and strategic vision.” He noted that Odogwu successfully steered the firm through turbulent regulatory waters, including the high-stakes recapitalization exercises that redefined the Nigerian insurance landscape.
”Mr. Odogwu, your career reminds us that true leadership is measured not by noise, but by impact and the strength of the institutions left behind,” the Governor stated. He emphasized that such disciplined leadership is essential for Lagos to maintain its status as the continent’s premier financial hub.

The ceremony drew an elite crowd, including the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dr. Sam Ode, former Petroleum Minister Ibe Kachikwu, and renowned economist Prof. Pat Utomi, highlighting Odogwu’s cross-sectoral influence.
Odogwu, a legal practitioner with an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business, took over the chairmanship during a pivotal period in 2007. His tenure saw the 2008 reorganization of the company into a group structure and recent strategic investments from the German-backed InsuResilience Investment Fund.

As he steps down, the baton passes to Mr. Ikeme Osakwe, a financial management specialist, who inherits a company recently rebranded as ‘REX’ and positioned for a tech-driven future in the retail and agricultural insurance markets.
