Kebbi Resident Abducted Hours After Demanding End to Banditry

​BIRNIN KEBBI — In a harrowing testament to the hyper-volatile security landscape in Northwest Nigeria, a local resident of Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area was kidnapped by terrorists barely hours after using social media to plead for government intervention against regional banditry.

​The victim, identified as Lawal Jabir Sahabi, a resident of Wasagu town, was taken alongside several other community members during a daring Thursday night raid.

​From Social Media Plea to Captivity

​On Thursday afternoon, Sahabi had taken to Facebook to express his growing anxiety over the unchecked movement and operations of armed bandits across Wasagu villages. In a direct appeal to the ruling political establishment, he warned of the electoral consequences of the persistent violence.

​”Kebbi state government should continue to stop the terrorism in Wasagu villages; if it goes like that, it is difficult for these people to vote for APC,” Sahabi’s post read.

​By midnight, the very threat he warned against knocked on his door. Heavily armed gunmen reportedly breached Wasagu town, sweeping through the neighborhood and herding Sahabi and other captives into the nearby forests.

​The abduction was confirmed on Friday morning by prominent regional security analyst, Bakatsine, who shared the development on the social media platform X.

​”Just yesterday afternoon, he made this post,” Bakatsine noted, referencing Sahabi’s digital plea. “Tragically, later last night, bandits reportedly raided his area in Wasagu town, Danko-Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State, abducting him alongside some residents.”

​The incident has triggered widespread outrage and somber reflection online, with friends and local activists pointing out the grim irony of Sahabi’s rapid abduction. “Lawal Jabir Sahabi posted this and saw his own destiny,” wrote local resident Sufiyanu Sani Na Ghana in a viral Facebook reaction.

​Danko-Wasagu LGA has increasingly become ground zero for high-profile terrorist incursions in Kebbi State. The area recently drew national grief and legislative scrutiny following a brutal pre-dawn raid on the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, where a school official was killed and 25 students were taken hostage before their subsequent release.

​The latest incident highlights a chilling trend where citizens speaking out against deteriorating rural security are targeted or caught in the crosshairs of rapid reprisal raids.

​According to data compiled by Amnesty International, the human toll of the security crisis remains staggering, with at least 1,100 individuals documented as abducted across the country between January and April 2026 alone, with northern states bearing the brunt of the onslaught.
