The Patron of the Tinubu National Think-Tank and former federal lawmaker, Hon Jelili Kayode Amusan, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Amusan, a two-term member of the House of Representatives who represented Odeda, Obafemi-Owode and Abeokuta North Federal Constituency, made his declaration in a statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta.
He explained that his renewed ambition is driven by a desire to further contribute to the development of Ogun State and to consolidate the gains of the current administration. According to him, his intention to join the race, as Patron of the Tinubu National Think-Tank and Founder of the JKA Support Group For PBAT Till 2031 Movement, is “greatly inspired” by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He added that his objective is to sustain the achievements recorded so far and ensure that the people of Ogun continue to enjoy what he described as the true dividends of democracy.
Amusan stressed that he is no stranger to intense political contests, having previously contested twice for the Ogun Central Senatorial ticket and twice for the Ogun State governorship ticket. Those efforts, he noted, have helped him build an extensive political network and consolidate grassroots structures across the length and breadth of the state. Over the years, he has also deepened his involvement in pro-Tinubu structures, including his role in the Tinubu National Think-Tank and various mobilisation platforms canvassing support for the President beyond 2027.
The Egba-born politician pledged that his aspiration would be pursued strictly within the ambit of the law and party regulations. “While I sincerely have the interest to contest the governorship race of Ogun State come 2027, I remain committed, as a responsible and law-abiding citizen, to follow due process and strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and the APC Constitution,” he stated. He urged his supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and to engage in issue-based mobilisation ahead of the party primaries.
Anchoring his decision on his two-term legislative experience in the National Assembly, Amusan pointed to his record in lawmaking and constituency projects as evidence of his capacity to lead the state. He maintained that his exposure at the federal level, combined with his ongoing support for President Tinubu’s administration, has prepared him for the task of providing purposeful and progressive leadership in Ogun.
