The Federal Government has officially appointed Dr. John Nwabueze as Nigeria’s inaugural Tax Ombudsman, a milestone under the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act of 2025. This strategic appointment marks a pivotal move by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to implement far-reaching, sustainable reforms within the nation’s tax and revenue management systems.
Dr. Nwabueze, a distinguished tax and finance professional hailing from Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, brings a wealth of expertise drawn from both public and private sectors. His previous roles include Managing Partner at a respected tax advisory firm, Technical Adviser to the Joint Senate Committees on the Federal Capital Territory and Finance, and Technical Adviser to the Chief Economic Adviser during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure. Academically, he holds a Doctor of Business Administration (Finance) from Walden University in the United States, a Master of Science in Accounting from Strayer University, Washington D.C., and dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Mathematics from the University of Jos.
President Tinubu congratulated Dr. Nwabueze on his appointment, expressing confidence in his integrity, professionalism, and ability to discharge his responsibilities diligently. The establishment of the Tax Ombudsman office reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s tax system, fostering public trust, and improving the overall tax culture.
The office will serve as an independent entity mandated to receive, review, and resolve complaints from taxpayers regarding taxes, levies, regulatory charges, customs duties, and excise matters. It aims to provide a fair, efficient, and non-confrontational platform for resolving disputes, safeguarding taxpayers from arbitrary or abusive behaviors by tax officials. By ensuring impartial resolution of conflicts, the Ombudsman’s office is expected to increase voluntary compliance, reduce litigation, and enhance administrative efficiency.
This appointment comes on the heels of comprehensive tax legislation reforms enacted earlier in 2025, including the Nigeria Tax Act and affiliated laws that consolidated and modernized the country’s tax code. These reforms are designed to broaden the tax base, simplify compliance processes, and improve revenue collection without adding undue burdens on individuals or businesses.
As Nigeria continues on its path to financial and economic reform, Dr. John Nwabueze’s role as Tax Ombudsman will be crucial in balancing government revenue objectives with the protection of taxpayer rights, thereby fostering a more transparent and equitable tax environment
