The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a stern warning to several Nigerian tertiary institutions for violating admission guidelines, describing the violations as serious aberrations. The affected institutions, having conducted admissions via JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), failed to upload their matriculation lists, which is mandatory for approval of admissions. Following a meeting on August 18, 2025, the institutions apologized and were given a strict seven-day deadline to submit the outstanding matriculation lists. JAMB emphasized that candidates not on the National Matriculation List are considered not legitimately admitted, warning the institutions that illegal admissions will not be condoned and may expose them to lawsuits from affected candidates.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, highlighted that institutions must upload matriculation lists for JAMB’s verification as a precondition before matriculation ceremonies and official recognition. He warned the institutions of grave consequences, including disenfranchisement of students and regulatory sanctions. The meeting resolutions include immediate submission of formal apologies and assurance that affiliate institutions operate strictly under the supervision of parent institutions. Notably, Olusegun Agagu University, Okitipupa, and Wellspring University, Benin, were absent from the meeting, raising the prospect of tougher penalties.
This enforcement aligns with JAMB’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on admissions fraud and maintain transparency and accountability through the CAPS and National Matriculation List systems. Institutions failing to comply face the risk of having their admissions for the 2024 and 2025 sessions disapproved, which can drastically affect candidates’ eligibility for programs like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The Board insists on zero tolerance for illegal admissions to safeguard the integrity and future of Nigerian tertiary education
