Ekiti State House of Assembly has sounded a note of warning to stakeholders and government agencies at all levels against the menace of deforestation in the state especially as the harmattan season kicks in.
The call followed a motion moved by a member representing Ilejemeje constituency, Hon. Iyabo Fakunle-Okieimen, and seconded by Hon. Tunde Idowu representing Ikere constituency 2,
In a release signed by the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs Hon. Oke Babatunde, the Assembly noted the importance of preserving and protecting the natural environment for the well-being of current and future generations.
It however warned that deforestation poses a significant threat to the ecological integrity, biodiversity, and sustainability of the state’s forests and natural landscapes.
The statement reads, “Whereas, the Ekiti State House of Assembly recognizes the critical importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment for the well-being of current and future generations; and whereas, deforestation poses a significant threat to the ecological integrity, biodiversity, and sustainability of Ekiti State’s forests and natural landscapes, as well as the livelihoods of our citizens
“As a proactive measure towards averting the negative effects of deforestation in our environ this season and beyond, it became necessary to call on government to prioritize efforts at addressing and mitigating the menace of deforestation across the state.”
The lawmakers also called for the implementation of strategies to stop/prevent illegal logging, unauthorized land clearing, and unsustainable agricultural practices that contribute to deforestation.
“The House urges the Ekiti State Government to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including local communities, environmental organizations, and forestry experts, to develop and implement effective strategies for the prevention of illegal logging, unauthorized land clearing, and unsustainable agricultural practices that contribute to deforestation.”
“The Ekiti State Government is called upon to raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation and sustainable land use practices, as well as to engage in educational and outreach activities to promote environmental stewardship and community participation in conservation efforts.” he added.
The House directed the Clerk Mr. Tola Esan to transmit its resolution on the matter to the Governor, relevant government agencies and other stakeholders for speedy action.
