Israel and Hamas have reached a landmark ceasefire agreement aimed at ending more than two years of devastating conflict in Gaza, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and created a dire humanitarian crisis. The deal, announced on Thursday and expected to be formalized in Egypt, includes a prisoner exchange and significant humanitarian aid commitments.
Following the 20-point peace plan unveiled last month by U.S. President Donald Trump, Israel is set to release nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including security detainees held since the start of the war and some serving life sentences. Hamas, in turn, will free 20 living Israeli hostages simultaneously as part of the agreement’s first phase, aiming for the exchange to take place within 72 hours of the deal’s activation, according to a senior Hamas source.
This historic arrangement marks a major breakthrough in the conflict triggered by Hamas’s surprise October 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in roughly 1,200 Israeli deaths and the taking of approximately 250 hostages. The subsequent Israeli military offensive on Gaza has led to widespread destruction and hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the agreement as a “great day for Israel” and described it as a diplomatic and moral victory. Netanyahu announced plans to convene his cabinet on Thursday evening to formally approve the deal, which includes a planned withdrawal of Israeli troops to an agreed line inside Gaza, signaling the beginning of a potential de-escalation.
The agreement is expected to pave the way for a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza, ending over two years of blockades and intermittent conflict that have left the dense coastal territory in ruins. Palestinians in Gaza have expressed cautious hope, seeing the ceasefire as a momentary respite from relentless bombing and displacement.
U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the announcement on his social media platform, describing the agreement as a “fantastic achievement for Israelis, Palestinians, and the region.” He extended thanks to mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and other nations involved in facilitating the deal.
While the deal addresses the immediate goal of hostages’ release and troop withdrawal, other components of Trump’s broader peace proposal, such as Hamas’s disarmament and establishing a transitional authority in Gaza, remain unresolved. High-ranking Israeli ministers within Netanyahu’s coalition have voiced opposition to any agreements with Hamas, underscoring continuing political challenges ahead.
The coming days will be critical as all parties seek to implement the agreement, with millions watching in hope that this ceasefire will usher in an era of lasting peace after years of bloodshed in the region.
