The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against violent crime in the Southeast with the arrest of Chukwujekwu Ugwu, better known by his alias “Jekwu.” Ugwu, a high-ranking commander within the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), was apprehended by tactical squads during a coordinated sting operation. Acting on credible intelligence, security forces traced the suspect to a popular beer parlour in the Akwuke area of Enugu South Local Government Area, where he was taken into custody without incident.
A Trail of Violence
For months, “Jekwu” has been on the radar of national security agencies. He is allegedly the mastermind behind a series of coordinated attacks on both security personnel and civilian populations across the region. Preliminary investigations link him to:
- Targeted assassinations of police officers and military personnel at checkpoints.
- Arson attacks on government infrastructure and electoral offices.
- Enforcement of illegal “sit-at-home” orders, often involving the intimidation and harassment of local traders.
The Enugu State Police Command described the arrest as a “major blow” to the operational capacity of the group in the state. Officials noted that Ugwu’s capture provides a vital opportunity to dismantle the local cell he commanded and recover illegal arms used in recent insurgencies.
Commitment to Stability
Security experts suggest that this arrest underscores a shift toward intelligence-led policing in the Southeast. While the suspect remains in custody for further interrogation, the police have urged residents of Akwuke and the wider Enugu metropolis to remain vigilant and continue providing actionable information to law enforcement.
The suspect is expected to be charged with multiple counts of terrorism, murder, and conspiracy once investigations are concluded.
