NAIROBI — An international luxury safari tour turned into an unprecedented tragedy on Wednesday morning when a charter helicopter crashed into the rugged foothills of Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County, northern Kenya, claiming the lives of all seven people on board.

The victims include high-ranking foreign officials and prominent media figures, sparking profound grief across multiple continents. Among the dead are Michele Sensi-Contugi, the Director General of Ecuador’s Strategic Intelligence Center, and five United States citizens, including prominent business and media executives.

Chronology of the Disaster

According to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the aircraft—a Eurocopter EC130 B4 operated by Lady Lori Helicopters on behalf of luxury safari provider &Beyond—took off from the Loisaba Conservancy.

The flight was charted to transport guests toward the Ewaso Nyiro River area. At approximately 9:13 a.m. local time, eyewitnesses on the ground reported seeing the helicopter circling the iconic, flat-topped sacred mountain before striking the rocky terrain and erupting into flames.

Local guides and community members rushed toward the remote site as thick plumes of black smoke filled the valley. Multi-agency rescue teams, including the Kenya Red Cross and emergency units dispatched from Isiolo, faced severe operational challenges due to treacherous terrain and active fires raging around the wreckage. Tropic Air Kenya also deployed support helicopters to assist local authorities. Samburu County Police Commander David Nkoroi later confirmed that there were no survivors.

The tragedy has reverberated internationally as the identities of the passengers came to light:

  • Michele Sensi-Contugi: The head of Ecuador’s national intelligence agency, who was visiting Kenya on a private wildlife holiday.
  • Stephany Hollihan Vásconez: Sensi-Contugi’s wife, a fashion designer who held dual United States and Ecuadorian citizenship.
  • José Alberto Suárez: A prominent American media executive who served as the president and general manager of multiple Telemundo television stations in Florida.
  • Additional US Nationals: The State Department confirmed that the remaining passengers included Miami-based restaurateur Roger Edward Duarte, real estate executive Adam Hlavaty, and software executive Henry Parra.
  • Flight Crew: Captain Josh Outram, a respected local aviator, perished while piloting the aircraft.

Official Responses and Investigation

Governments around the globe have expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Ecuador’s presidential office issued a formal statement describing the loss of its intelligence chief as a moment of deep national sorrow. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department confirmed it is actively coordinating with Kenyan authorities to provide consular assistance and facilitate repatriation.

The Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID) under Kenya’s Ministry of Roads and Transport has taken charge of the inquiry to determine the exact mechanical or environmental factors that caused the aircraft to go down. The crash has renewed local scrutiny regarding the safety and frequency of light aircraft and helicopter charters operating across Kenya’s vast and demanding safari routes.
