Installation of ‘Baale’ by Alaafin’s wife in order, says palace spokesperson

Bode Durojaye, the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has confirmed that the installation of Baale of Ona-Aka community in Oyo town, Oyedokun Akinade by the Alaafin’s wife, Abiwumi Owoade was in order.

He made this confirmation during an interview with PUNCH Online in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Thursday.

It will be recalled that the installation, which was held at the Palace of Alaafin of Oyo on Wednesday, had stirred up debates among the people in the Yoruba-speaking states.

Durojaye added that a similar scenario happened during the reign of the immediate-past Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola III.

“The Chieftaincy tradition of Oyo town allows Ayaba to preside over the installation of Baale as directed by the Kabiyesi, the Alaafin of Oyo.

“The Alaafin is permitted, in accordance with the Chieftaincy tradition of Oyo kingdom to designate such a function to Ayaba while only Kabiyesi can install the Obas,” he insisted.

Meanwhile, Ayaba Owoade was quoted in a statement by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, admonishing the newly installed to build strong networks based on trust and respect, and nurturing a sense of belonging and community identity.

She urged the new community to bridge gaps between different groups, ensuring inclusivity and preventing disparities that can lead to internal conflict.

“You act as an arbitrator in household and community-level disputes, using dialogue and mediation to maintain harmony. You must promote values like tolerance, respect, and compassion, which are essential for a harmonious society.

“You are the first line of defemce in maintaining stability. You must identify early warning signs of conflict and use local mechanisms, such as traditional courts, to resolve disputes. As Baale, you must actively encourage peaceful coexistence, reminding your people that disunity delays development.

“As a community head, you play a foundational role in fostering unity, maintaining peace, and driving development at the grassroots level. You act as vital intermediaries between the Alaafin and the people, leveraging their moral authority to ensure social cohesion, resolve conflicts, and mobilize resources for community betterment.”
