The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), through its Murtala Muhammed Area Command (MMAC) in Lagos, has intercepted a significant illegal wildlife shipment involving 17 live scorpions and 340 snakes. This major enforcement action underscores the agency’s commitment to combating illicit trafficking of endangered species and protecting biodiversity.
During a briefing held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Michael Awe, revealed that the contraband was discovered at the airport’s export section. Describing the interception as a severe breach of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), he emphasized the importance of vigilance in curbing the illegal trade of protected wildlife.
“We have seized 17 live scorpions, which are classified under CITES regulations. Although we are unsure how many of these animals have already left the country, the presence of such species here clearly indicates that smuggling activities persist. We are determined to make this location an inhospitable point for anyone attempting illegal export,” Comptroller Awe stated.
He further recalled a similar recent seizure at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) export terminal, where 340 snake specimens were confiscated. These animals are currently held securely in government custody, awaiting transfer to the appropriate wildlife conservation authorities.
The Customs controller assured that the seized live animals will be handed over to relevant agencies for proper care and action in accordance with global conservation standards. This move aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under international treaties aimed at preserving endangered fauna and flora.
