High-level friction grips Nigeria’s police leadership as Bukola Kuti, Principal Staff Officer 3 (PSO 3) to Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, intensifies efforts to force Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu into retirement. Police insiders claim Kuti, now an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) with influence over key postings, views Disu as the source of damaging leaks about a N100 million security vote payment to Egbetokun’s son, Victor Adewale. This move escalates internal resentments already fueled by Kuti’s rapid promotions, which peers attribute to her closeness to the IGP.
Leak Origins and Police Tensions
Kuti has urged Egbetokun to retire Disu immediately, framing him as responsible for exposing the controversial funds transfer from Anambra State’s security vote account. Sources describe her as steering deployments while targeting perceived threats, amid broader unease over her ascent past many stuck at Superintendent rank. Egbetokun himself expressed fury over the scandal’s publicity, suspecting Anambra officials and internal rivals like Disu of orchestrating leaks to undermine him politically.
Disu, not due for mandatory retirement until around April 2026 based on his 1992 entry into the force, recently held senior roles including head of the Intelligence Response Team. His promotion to AIG came under Egbetokun in 2025, but sources now paint him as a suspect in eyes of the IGP’s inner circle.
Victor Egbetokun’s Financial Controversy
The core allegation involves four N25 million transfers totaling N100 million in September 2025 from Anambra’s Sterling Bank security vote account (No. 0102521622) to Victor’s Zenith Bank account (No. 4236010637). Victor, lacking any official role in Anambra or security agencies, received funds meant for tackling South-East insurgency, attacks on facilities, and killings during a period of heightened violence.
Documents show reversals on September 29, 2025, but cash withdrawals from the security account led to four N25 million deposits back into Victor’s account by October 2 (transaction IDs: 15039864828, 15039863135, 15039862781, 15039864829). Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin quoted Victor claiming unawareness of the “suspicious inflow” and immediate reversal instructions, with standing alerts on his account.
IGP’s Reaction and Broader Fallout
Egbetokun reportedly confronted his son, likening risks to ex-IGP Tafa Balogun’s 2005 corruption downfall, and ordered fund returns—yet cash redeposits persisted. He blames Anambra for betrayal despite his election support and eyes Disu as a potential successor fueling the exposure. Kuti’s push amplifies these suspicions, highlighting rifts in the Force Headquarters as Nigeria grapples with security funding scrutiny.
