Passenger Assaults Crew on Ibom Air Flight from Uyo to Lagos, Faces Travel Ban

An unruly passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, significantly disrupted an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos on August 10, 2025, culminating in a violent assault on airline crew and airport security upon arrival. The incident highlights the airline’s strict enforcement of safety protocols and its zero-tolerance policy toward unruly behavior that threatens the safety of passengers and crew.

Before takeoff, Ms. Emmanson was instructed to switch off her mobile phone as part of the standard safety procedures. She initially refused, requiring intervention by the Pilot-in-Command and a fellow passenger before compliance. After reaching Lagos, rather than disembarkin peacefully, Ms. Emmanson confronted the Purser who had instructed her. She violently assaulted the Purser, including stepping on her, tearing off her wig, removing and throwing her glasses, slapping her repeatedly, and using her footwear to attack. When another crew member intervened, she was also slapped.

The situation escalated further as Ms. Emmanson attempted to remove a fire extinguisher from the aircraft, posing a serious safety risk. Despite the arrival of airport security and Ibom Air security personnel, she continued to resist violently, attacking security staff and even slapping the ground supervisor. Security forces had to forcibly restrain and remove her from the plane, subsequently handing her over to the Nigeria Police for investigation.

Ibom Air has responded by filing a detailed report with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and has placed a permanent travel ban on Ms. Emmanson, prohibiting her from flying with the airline. The airline commended its crew for their bravery and professionalism during the distressing event and praised the swift support from airport security and police.

The NCAA, through its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, emphasized the importance of passengers adhering to cabin crew instructions, particularly regarding safety protocols like mobile phone use during takeoff and landing. He called on travelers to recognize their responsibilities alongside their rights to prevent such dangerous incidents.

This event adds to growing concerns in Nigeria’s aviation sector about passenger misconduct, which jeopardizes safety and disrupts operations. Ibom Air reaffirmed that all unruly behavior will attract the strongest legal actions and permanent restrictions to protect passengers, crew, and equipment.
