The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has condemned the public release of an indecent video showing a female passenger, Comfort Emmanson, involved in a violent altercation aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos on August 10, 2025. While acknowledging the importance of recording the passenger’s unruly behavior as evidence for prosecution, the Minister described the dissemination of footage containing indecent exposure as “totally unacceptable” and announced that the staff member responsible for releasing such footage will be identified and sanctioned accordingly.
The incident began when Emmanson refused to switch off her mobile phone before takeoff, violating international aviation safety regulations. This led to a confrontation with the airline’s crew. The situation escalated on arrival in Lagos, where Emmanson physically assaulted a flight attendant and clashed violently with airport security personnel, necessitating her forcible removal from the aircraft. The airline and aviation authorities described her actions as a serious threat to the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft.
In response to the incident, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed an indefinite ban on Emmanson from flying on local and international flights. She was promptly arraigned at Ikeja Magistrates Court on charges including assault and was remanded at Kirikiri Prison after failing to meet bail conditions.
Minister Keyamo emphasized that while airlines must train their staff in managing potentially explosive situations to avoid escalation, the protection of womanhood and dignity is paramount. He also ordered a joint security meeting between relevant agencies for improved coordination in handling such incidents. The Minister reminded the public of established channels for passenger grievances and warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, which could lead to serious consequences.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has likewise condemned Emmanson’s behavior and supported the indefinite ban, reiterating a zero-tolerance policy on violent or unruly conduct in the aviation sector.
The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, with some criticizing the airline and security personnel for their handling of the passenger, including the exposure of her during the altercation, while others condemned Emmanson’s actions for escalating the conflict.
This case serves as a stern reminder of the responsibilities passengers hold in ensuring safety and order in air travel, alongside their rights, and demonstrates the firm stance of Nigerian aviation authorities against disruptions that endanger public safety.
