Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced his intention to retire from politics after completing an eight-year tenure as governor. He made this declaration during a reception organized by the Anambra Development Unions Association, Aba branch, on Saturday.
Governor Otti dismissed rumors of a senatorial ambition, describing them as unfounded. “When I finish my eight years here, I will retire. I am not going to Abuja,” he stated, urging critics to stop spreading falsehoods. He emphasized the importance of empowering younger leaders, citing the evolving political landscape and growing youth participation. “We are no longer that young. Society is changing, and the young ones are rising. It’s time we give them the opportunity,” he added.
Additionally, Otti revealed plans to review the 2011 dismissal of 154 civil servants, mostly teachers, from the state workforce. He assured that workers under 65 years of age might be reengaged on a contract basis to address teacher shortages in the state. He condemned their dismissal based on state of origin as unjust and illegal and promised fair compensation for those outside the reemployment age bracket.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice, inclusivity, and correcting past injustices. His leadership was praised by lawmakers Stephen Ucheonye and Obiora Nwakpadolo for his developmental strides, which inspired the reception held in his honor.
