IBADAN, OYO STATE – A quiet act of philanthropy by Engineer Seyi Makinde, long before he became Governor of Oyo State, has unexpectedly blossomed into a global milestone. His donation of a computer laboratory to his alma mater, Bishop Phillips Academy in Ibadan, has been credited as the foundational spark for Oluwatobi “Tobi” Oyinlola, a Nigerian researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who recently achieved a Guinness World Record for building the world’s smallest GPS tracking device.
Oyinlola’s groundbreaking prototype, measuring a mere 22.93 mm x 11.92 mm – smaller than a thumbprint – boasts full GPS tracking functionality and Bluetooth streaming capabilities. This revolutionary device has the potential to transform various industries, from medical devices and wearables to wildlife monitoring and personal safety.
Tobi’s journey into the world of technology began at the tender age of 13, when he first encountered a computer in the very lab funded by then-businessman Seyi Makinde. “From the moment I booted it up, I was absolutely captivated,” Oyinlola told Guinness World Records. “That early exposure created an endless curiosity in me and set me on the path that led to where I am today.”
This initial spark from Makinde’s timely donation nurtured Oyinlola’s lifelong passion for STEM. His impressive trajectory includes developing Nigeria’s first pay-as-you-go solar energy systems and contributing to smart city innovations, gas solutions, and solar-powered workstations across Africa.
The inspiration for his record-breaking miniaturized GPS device stemmed from the limitations he observed in existing wearable technology. “The current devices were either too big or too power-hungry,” he explained. “I wanted to create a tracker so compact it could fit almost anywhere, from microchips in medicine to hidden safety gear.”
Developed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the prototype underwent independent verification by engineers and architects before receiving official Guinness World Records approval on April 27, 2025. “Honestly, it feels incredible, and a bit surreal, to know I’ve created something record-breaking,” Tobi shared. “It really highlighted how far I’ve come from that curious 13-year-old in the computer lab.”
The achievement has garnered widespread acclaim, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praising Oyinlola for demonstrating that “Nigerian youth can.” Oyinlola’s work has made headlines both internationally and within Nigeria, serving as a powerful testament to the enduring impact of investing in education and empowering young minds.
While Governor Seyi Makinde, whose administration has since prioritized education and technological access, has yet to publicly comment on this specific news, the story underscores the profound ripple effect of his early philanthropic vision. What began as a humble gesture years ago has now culminated in a global breakthrough, showcasing the immense potential unleashed when opportunity meets talent.
