Cusco, Peru – A homeless man who offered solace and companionship to a stranded British backpacker in Cusco, Peru, has tragically died just days after her rescue. The elderly man, known only by the initials ‘NN’ (“Ningun Nombre” or “no name”), was found dead in his bed,May 29th, at a charity home where he had been taken to receive care.
The man’s passing comes swiftly after 32-year-old Hannah Almond, who had been sleeping rough under Belén Bridge with him, was located and is now expected to return to the UK. Almond had been left destitute after being violently robbed and having her belongings burned, forcing her to live on the streets of Cusco.
Friends of Ms. Almond, who launched a GoFundMe to bring her home, had highlighted the unique bond she formed with the homeless man. They stated he was “the only person she currently trusts,” underscoring the vital support he provided during her ordeal.
Local Peruvian news outlet Diario Correro reported that despite appearing healthy when admitted to the charity home, the man was found deceased. Legal advisor Henry Gonzáles stated that there were no indications of foul play. Authorities are now attempting to identify him through fingerprint analysis and may launch a public appeal. If his identity cannot be determined, he will be buried in a pauper’s grave.
Hannah Almond’s dramatic story captivated attention after she went missing on May 24th. Piero Villanueva, a man who had previously met her, successfully located her on the city streets, confirming she was “safe and well.” The GoFundMe established for her travel costs and emergency care is reportedly close to its £10,000 target.
The death of the unidentified homeless man casts a somber shadow over Hannah Almond’s rescue, highlighting the harsh realities faced by those living on the streets and the unexpected bonds forged in adversity.
