Kano, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Zonal Directorate, has launched a full-scale investigation into two suspects apprehended with a staggering $899,800 in counterfeit United States Dollars. The arrest has shed light on an elaborate scheme involving a self-proclaimed spiritualist who allegedly promises to “transform” fake currency into genuine notes through ritual prayers.

The suspects, Abubakar Hussaini (42) and Sahabi Adamu (53), were initially intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) along Maiduguri Road, Wudil, Kano State. They were reportedly en route to Kila Village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State in a commercial Golf 3 Station Wagon car.
Upon a thorough search of their vehicle, NDLEA agents discovered the large stash of suspected fake dollars cleverly concealed within a Maggi Star seasoning carton. The suspects and the incriminating exhibits were promptly handed over to the EFCC for deeper inquiry.
Preliminary investigations by the EFCC have revealed a startling twist to the illicit operation. It is understood that Hussaini and Adamu were transporting the counterfeit currency to Kila Village with the intention of meeting one Muhammad Walo. Walo was allegedly slated to introduce them to a certain Mallam Mashiru, who parades himself as a spiritualist. Mashiru’s purported specialty? The ability to conjure genuine currency from counterfeit notes through mystical prayers and rituals.
This incident highlights a disturbing trend of individuals falling prey to spiritual fraudsters who exploit their desperation for wealth. The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to combating financial crimes, including currency counterfeiting, which poses a significant threat to the nation’s economic stability.
The arrested suspects, Abubakar Hussaini and Sahabi Adamu, remain in EFCC custody. The Commission has assured the public that they will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. Meanwhile, efforts are reportedly underway to apprehend Muhammad Walo and the elusive spiritualist, Mallam Mashiru, as the EFCC delves deeper into the intricate web of this spiritual scam.
