A multi-agency law enforcement blitz targeting the sale of counterfeit, illicit and non-compliant products at retail outlets across Bloemfontein has resulted in the seizure of various goods, the opening of a criminal case and one arrest.
The South African Police Service, working with the Department of Agriculture and other partners, carried out a series of joint compliance and enforcement operations at identified outlets in the Free State capital this week. Officials conducted 10 inspections aimed at clamping down on the distribution of potentially harmful goods while enforcing relevant legislation.

Non-compliant products seized during the operations included honey, various consumables and scheduled medication. In a separate action, officers confiscated illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of about R250 000.
The Consumer Protection component’s inspections led to the registration of one criminal case docket under the Counterfeit Goods Act and the Medicines and Related Substances Act. A 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with the matter.

The operations form part of ongoing partnership policing efforts under the banners of #StopIllicitTrade and #SayNOtoCounterfeitGoods.
Authorities emphasise that counterfeit and non-compliant products not only undermine legitimate businesses and tax revenue but can also pose serious health and safety risks to the public, particularly when pharmaceuticals, food items such as honey, or other consumables are involved.

Similar multi-agency actions against illicit trade have been conducted elsewhere in the Free State and nationally in recent months, reflecting a sustained focus on disrupting networks dealing in fake branded goods, unregulated medicines and smuggled cigarettes.
