Umuna, Okigwe, Imo State – A wave of fear and destruction swept through Umuna in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State today, Thursday, as unidentified armed gunmen unleashed a devastating attack. In the early hours, the assailants set ablaze more than 20 trucks, triggering a massive inferno that spread to several nearby shops and properties, leaving a trail of significant damage.



Eyewitness accounts paint a chaotic scene as residents fled in panic amidst thick plumes of smoke rising from the burning vehicles. The targeted trucks were reportedly laden with various goods, including gravel, petrol, and diesel, which intensified the raging fire.
While the exact motive behind this brazen act of arson remains unclear at this time, authorities have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and ascertain the reasons for the attack.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over security in the region. Initial reports suggest a possible link to the enforcement of a sit-at-home order, though this remains unconfirmed. There are also unverified reports of casualties resulting from the attack.
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and stated that a joint security team comprising the Police, Army, and Department of State Services (DSS) has been deployed to the area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, a coordinated manhunt is underway to apprehend the criminals responsible for this heinous act. He further stated that security operatives are conducting a full-scale search and cordon operation in the surrounding areas.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, personally led the joint tactical team to the scene to assess the situation and provide support to the affected victims. He has assured residents of the command’s commitment to restoring security to the area and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
This attack comes amidst heightened security concerns in Imo State, with previous incidents involving armed gunmen targeting civilians and security personnel. Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts to restore normalcy and apprehend the culprits continue.
