BISSAU — Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced a severe setback in their quest for the upcoming continental showpiece, suffering a stunning 3-0 defeat at the hands of Guinea-Bissau in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture on Tuesday.
The match, played at a vibrant stadium in Bissau, saw the hosts capitalize on defensive lapses to secure a commanding victory in Group L.
Match Breakdown
The tone for a difficult evening was set in the 15th minute when Franculino Dju broke the deadlock. Dju capitalized on space to curl a precise effort into the far corner, leaving Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with no chance.
Despite boasting a potent attacking lineup featuring Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Akor Adams, the Super Eagles struggled to establish rhythm or carve out clear-cut opportunities during the first half. Lookman forced a notable save from Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje, but the hosts maintained their defensive discipline to carry a one-goal advantage into the break.
In an effort to turn the tide, the Nigerian technical crew introduced Moses Simon and Moses Usor at the interval. However, the tactical shift failed to stem Guinea-Bissau’s momentum on the counterattack.
In the 66th minute, Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ lead. Baldé cut sharply in from the left flank before unleashing a curling finish past Nwabali.
Further changes saw Eric Chelle introduce Tolu Arokodare, Victor Ilenikhena, and Raphael Onyedika to inject fresh energy into the attack. Ilenikhena came closest to breaking Nigeria’s duck, only to be denied by an exceptional close-range stop from Embadje. With Nigeria pressing desperately forward in the dying moments, Álvaro Djaló capitalized on a final defensive lapse in the fifth minute of stoppage time, slotting home to cap off a historic 3-0 win for the hosts.
Group L Implications
Following this heavy defeat, the Super Eagles face an uphill battle in Group L to secure their ticket for the tournament. With Tanzania securing automatic qualification as one of the tournament’s co-hosts, Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau are locked in a fierce contest for the remaining qualification spot.
The three-time African champions will need a swift and emphatic response in their upcoming fixtures to steady their qualification campaign.
