Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied access to the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on March 12, 2025, as he attempted to re-present the 2025 budget. This denial was reportedly ordered by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, an ally of former Governor Nyesom Wike, amid ongoing tensions between the governor and the assembly members loyal to Wike.
The assembly had previously rejected Fubara’s invitation for a meeting, insisting that communication should be formal rather than through social media. This refusal followed a Supreme Court ruling affirming the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led assembly, which demanded proper procedures for budget presentations and other legislative actions.
The political standoff shows significant divisions within Rivers State’s governance, with Fubara’s attempts at reconciliation facing resistance from assembly members who feel undermined by the governor’s previous actions and communications.
