German Amateur Footballer Arrested Over Teammate’s Poisoning Death

​German authorities have arrested a 35-year-abling amateur footballer on suspicion of fatally poisoning his teammate following an extensive homicide investigation into an incident that occurred more than a year ago.

​The suspect, whose identity has not been released under German privacy laws, was taken into custody by special police forces in the Wetterau region of Hesse. Investigators believe a personal motive for revenge may have driven the crime, which stems from a June 2025 end-of-season team trip to Dresden involving players from the amateur club TuS Rockenberg.

​During the excursion, a 30-year-old player suddenly fell ill. He was rushed to a hospital, where his condition deteriorated rapidly before he passed away.

​While the death was initially treated as a tragedy, an autopsy and subsequent toxicological examinations conducted at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Giessen uncovered alarming anomalies. Specialists determined that the player ultimately succumbed to septic multiple organ failure brought on by an administered poison, prompting regional prosecutors to open a formal homicide investigation.

​Law enforcement officials have remained tight-lipped regarding the specifics of the case, withholding details concerning the exact toxic substance used, how it was administered, or the precise nature of the suspected grievance between the two teammates.

​TuS Rockenberg released a statement expressing profound shock and grief over the developments, noting that the latest revelations have reopened painful wounds for the squad.

​”After we had to come to terms with the sudden death of our teammate in the football department last year, the events of last Tuesday have once again left us speechless,” the club said. “At present, none of us can comprehend this further devastating blow. We are now placing our hope in the work of the authorities and trust that the incident will be fully investigated.”
