Freetown, Sierra Leone — In a poignant display of regional gratitude and military diplomacy, the President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has conferred the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel—the nation’s highest civilian honour—on Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede.
The investiture took place during a vibrant parade marking the 17th Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). The ceremony served as a historic tribute to the international partners who played pivotal roles in restoring peace to the nation during its turbulent civil war years.
A Legacy of Bravery and Sacrifice
General Oluyede was specifically recognized for his distinguished service under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG). The citation highlighted his early career as a Platoon Commander, where he was stationed at the residence of the then-Sierra Leonean Head of State between 1992 and 1994. During this high-pressure deployment, Oluyede was noted for his “exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment” to the stability of the government and the protection of civilians.

President Bio emphasized that the award was not merely for the General’s individual brilliance, but also a collective salute to the “courage, sacrifice, and solidarity” of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Nigerian troops stood at the vanguard of regional peace enforcement, often at great personal cost, to defend Sierra Leone’s sovereignty and its people.
Regional Solidarity on Display
The ceremony was a gathering of military giants, with several other international figures receiving honours for their historical contributions to Sierra Leone’s peace process:
