Otunba Gbenga Daniel, former Ogun State Governor and Senator for Ogun East, has showered praise on security agencies and Ogun residents following the dramatic rescue of ex-lawmaker Hon. Maruf Musa from kidnappers’ clutches.
Musa, a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, was snatched by gunmen on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, around 8 p.m. while observing evening prayers in the Ibiade community, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. The brazen attack sent shockwaves through Ogun East Senatorial District and the state, heightening fears over escalating kidnappings in rural borders near Lagos and Ondo states.
In a statement released Thursday, January 1, 2026—two days after the abduction and hours after Musa’s release—Daniel thanked God for the politician’s safe return after roughly 72 hours in captivity. He hailed the operation as a shining example of sharp intelligence, seamless inter-agency teamwork, and unwavering professionalism.
Security Forces Lauded for Swift Action
Daniel specifically commended Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the Department of State Services (DSS), Ogun State Police Command, and the local DSS office. “Their dedication and rapid response have reaffirmed Nigeria’s security apparatus’ resolve to safeguard lives amid persistent threats,” he stated.
Recent reports confirm the rescue unfolded late Wednesday, January 1, without ransom payment or casualties, according to Ogun Police Public Relations Officer SP Omolola Odutola. A joint team tracked the kidnappers to a forested hideout in nearby Imoba, Waterside, engaging in a fierce shootout that forced the abductors to flee, abandoning Musa. Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, locally made pistols, and expended ammunition from the scene.

This success builds on Ogun’s aggressive anti-kidnapping drive. In 2025 alone, the state command neutralized over 20 suspects, rescued 50 victims, and dismantled multiple camps along the Lagos-Ogun-Ondo axis, per official stats. Yet, Waterside remains a hotspot, with border proximity aiding gunmen’s incursions from unstable regions.
Community Solidarity Shines Through
Beyond security operatives, Daniel applauded Ogun residents, especially in Ogun East, for their “overwhelming prayers, concern, and moral support.” He described the groundswell of solidarity as a “powerful reminder of our collective strength,” turning despair into hope.
Local leaders, including the Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Waterside, Oba Adewale Adetona, mobilized prayers at mosques and churches. Social media buzzed with #FreeMarufMusa, while politicians like House of Reps member Adesola Mustapha rallied support.
Renewed Hope Amid Insecurity Woes
Daniel called the incident a stark reminder of life’s fragility and Nigeria’s insecurity plague but insisted Musa’s freedom signals “evil will not triumph.” He urged unity, faith, and sustained security collaboration to conquer threats.
Wishing Musa full recovery—physical, emotional, and psychological—the senator reaffirmed his push for safety initiatives in Ogun East. “Together, we will foster peace and well-being,” he vowed.
Ogun’s kidnapping surge mirrors national trends: Nigeria recorded over 3,500 abductions in 2025, per SBM Intelligence, with South-West states like Ogun facing spillovers from Northwest banditry. Musa’s case underscores progress but highlights the need for bolstered border patrols and community intelligence.
As investigations continue, with two suspects arrested, Daniel’s words resonate: resilience and resolve can turn the tide.
