Port Harcourt, Rivers State – A massive fire erupted at Nobpet Filling Station, situated opposite the Air Force Base along the busy Airport Road in Port Harcourt, today, Friday, May 16, 2025, following a suspected gas explosion. The ensuing inferno has caused significant destruction, impacting the filling station, numerous vehicles, and nearby properties.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the explosion, believed to have originated from the gas section of the filling station, occurred around midday. The force of the blast ignited a raging fire that quickly engulfed the premises. Reports indicate that over 10 vehicles, including commercial buses and private cars, were burnt beyond repair. Tragically, early reports indicate that at least five individuals sustained injuries in the chaos.
The fire spread rapidly, also damaging several roadside shops and a nearby worship center, leaving a trail of devastation. While the exact number of affected properties is still being assessed, initial estimates of losses are substantial, potentially exceeding the earlier reported N300 million.

Emergency services, including the Rivers State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service, alongside fire fighting units from the Nigerian Air Force, responded to the scene. Their combined efforts were crucial in containing the blaze and preventing further spread to other buildings in the densely populated area. However, eyewitnesses reported initial delays due to the fire service exhausting their water supply, with the Air Force eventually providing crucial support.
The prompt response of emergency personnel has been lauded by onlookers, who believe their intervention prevented even greater catastrophe. Questions are now being raised regarding the safety protocols at the filling station, particularly concerning the presence of a buried gas tank and ongoing civil works reportedly being carried out in the vicinity.
While no fatalities have been confirmed at this time, the incident has understandably sparked considerable concern among the public regarding the safety of filling stations located in close proximity to residential and commercial areas. Many are calling for stricter regulations and more rigorous safety inspections of such facilities.
As of late Friday evening, neither the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State nor the Rivers State Fire Services have released an official statement detailing the cause of the explosion or the full extent of the damage. Investigations are reportedly underway to ascertain the precise circumstances that led to this devastating incident. Residents in the area are urged to remain cautious as authorities continue their work.
