The Fusengbuwa Ruling House has formally launched the selection process for a new Awujale of Ijebuland, receiving the symbolic Staff of Office from custodian Ogbeni Odi on December 2, 2025, following a directive from Ijebu-Ode Local Government. This pivotal step, marked by the beating of Gbedu drums, signals their turn in the rotational cycle among four ruling houses—Gbelegbuwa, Anikinaiya, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote—to nominate a worthy successor. The local government, through a letter signed by Secretary Hon. Oke Abiodun Adebayo, granted the house 14 days to present a candidate, stressing transparency, fairness, and adherence to customs without external interference.

Legacy of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona
Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the iconic Awujale who reigned for over 65 years since ascending the throne in 1960, passed away on July 13, 2025, at age 91. Born May 10, 1934, he stood as one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs, wielding immense influence across Yorubaland and the nation as a stabilizing voice in cultural and political spheres. His passing created a vacancy that prompted Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to engage stakeholders early, affirming support for a peaceful transition rooted in tradition.

Selection Process Underway
Leaders of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, including head Adedokun Ajidagba, emphasized invoking the Ifa oracle to guide the choice from eight family branches, rejecting money politics or undue influence. The process aligns with the Chiefs Law of 1957, involving kingmakers (Afobaje) after the house’s nomination, with the Olisa of Ijebu-Ode overseeing interim stability. Ijebuland anticipates a successor embodying Oba Adetona’s stature, as the 14-day ultimatum sets the stage for a culturally resonant coronation.
