Fusengbuwa Firm On Awujale Stool

​IJIBU-ODE — The Fusengbuwa Ruling House has intensified its push for the vacant Awujale throne, issuing a firm warning against alleged external plots to subvert its turn to produce the next paramount ruler of Ijebuland.

​Princes and princesses from across Lagos and various parts of the country converged on the historic Ile Nla (Agunsebi) in Ijebu-Ode for an enlarged family summit. The strategic gathering was convened to review the prolonged logjam trailing the selection process and evaluate legal measures adopted to secure the royal mandate.

​The meeting was co-chaired by the head of the ruling house and former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, alongside Deputy Chairman Otunba Adedokun Ajidagba and Vice Chairman Prof. Fassy Yusuf.

​Addressing journalists at the close of the deliberations, Owoyemi emphasized that the overwhelming turnout of royal family members dispelled rumors of internal fractures, underscoring an unyielding consensus.

​”The large attendance is an attestation of unity. The house is united. Princes and princesses came from Lagos and other places. They supported our decision, and they have confidence in our leadership and the things we are doing,” Owoyemi stated.

​”Our enemies are those who want to spoil things so that they will come back to say our ruling house cannot produce the next Awujale again.”

​The royal stool has remained vacant since July 2025 following the passing of the revered Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years until his death at age 91. Under the 1957 Customary Law Declaration regulating the succession, the throne rotates among four ruling houses: Gbelegbuwa, Anikinaiya, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote. With Oba Adetona hailing from the Anikinaiya house, the succession legally shifts to the Fusengbuwa lineage.

​However, the selection timeline hit a roadblock when the Ogun State government intervened, initially flagging procedural concerns in December 2025 before formally halting the process in January 2026 following security petitions and stakeholder disputes.

​In response to the administrative freeze, the ruling house initiated legal action at the Ogun State High Court, filing a suit against the state government, local kingmakers, and other respondents to compel the unhindered continuation and finalization of the selection process.

​Family leadership has urged members to remain calm and focused, assuring them that all necessary legal and administrative steps are being rigorously pursued to safeguard the heritage and legitimate entitlements of the Fusengbuwa bloodline.
