FUNAAB sets the tone to become Varsities sports’ champion, begins massive renovation of facilities

Undoubtedly, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, is one of the best universities in Nigeria known for academic excellence and astute leadership. It also has a rich history of winning laurels at various Varsities’ sports competitions within and outside the country.

To further strengthen the vision of the University of providing an enabling environment for the discovery and nurturing of talents in sports, the Management has commenced massive and aggressive renovation and improvement of the sporting facilities.

This development was contained in a release made available by Kolawole Adepoju, the Director of the Directorate of Public Relations, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.

According to Adepoju, the University under the leadership of Prof. Olusola Babatunde Kehinde has commenced total rehabilitation and renovation of decaying facilities at the Sports Complex.

“The Prof.Olusola Babatunde Kehinde-led Management of the University has commenced total rehabilitation and renovation of the decaying facilities at the Sports Complex.

Better still, the barely six weeks old Administration of the University is also set to construct security fencing of the opening at the back of the newly constructed Grandstand of the football pitch to ward off intruders.

Relaying an interview with Dr . Samuel Olabanji, Acting Director of Sports of the University, Adepoju stated: “The facilities are:Squash Court,Basket Ball Court,Volley Ball Court,Handball Court and Table Tennis Court.

“According to Dr. Olabanji, total rehabilitation and renovation of the entire sport courts aforementioned, started barely three weeks in office of the Seventh Substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof.Olusola Babatunde Kehinde FGSN,FIHS.

Dr.Olabanji disclosed that the ongoing rehabilitation of the Squash, Basket Ball, Handball, Volley Ball and Tennis Courts revolves around demolition, resurfacing flooring, roofing, screeding, perimeter fencing, furniture and fitting, among others.

“The Acting Director of Sports who was visibly elated at the ongoing rehabilitation of sporting facilities at the Complex expressed joy over the speedy and rapid intervention of the new Management of the University at addressing the soaring spate of rot therein immediately it assumed office.

He disclosed that this is the first time the Sports Complex is undergoing major rehabilitation since it was constructed by the then Prof.Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun Administration.

Dr.Olabanji who commended the immediate past Administration of Prof.Felix Kolawole Salako for adding to the facilities he met at the Complex, however said the ongoing rehabilitation of the facilities therein is unprecedented since the Sports Centre was constructed.

The Acting Director of Sports said he was also amazed by the decision of Prof.Kehinde-led Management decision to improve the standard of the new Grandstand at the Complex which was constructed by the immediate past Administration.

Dr.Olabanji disclosed that the new Management is set to construct perforated security fencing and put a befitting gate to cover up the opening at the back of the football pitch Grandstand,to prevent intrusion and beef up security.

Similarly, he further revealed that Management will also construct walkway to connect the Grandstand with the Tennis Court.

Dr.Olabanji described Management’s intervention as a morale booster for his leadership of the Directorate of Sports,the entire staff and motivation for the various students who are flying the flag of the University to perform far better at local and international tournaments .

He expressed profound gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and his Management team for responding swiftly to the age long needs of the Directorate, moreso that the facilities at the Complex have started decaying.
