….. A Rescue Mission for Aquaculture and Fisheries Production and Management in Nigeria.
Professor Yemi Akegbejo- Samsons, a Professor of Aquaculture and Coastal Fisheries Management at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Nigeria is set to deliver the 75th Inaugural Lecture of the University titled : Repositioning our Coastal Environment – A Rescue Mission for Aquaculture and Fisheries Production and Management in Nigeria.
The 75th Inaugural Lecture which comes up on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 under the chairmanship of the 7th substantive Vice- Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olusola Babatunde Kehinde promises to provide solutions to the myriad of challenges facing the management of Nigeria’s water resources.
Prof Akegbejo-Samsons has worked at FUNAAB for over 25 years where he has risen from the position of Lecturer ll to the position of Professor in 2009.
Akegbejo who is a renewable Natural Resources Manager spanning through over thirty years of committed learning, teaching and writing about the essentials of the management of tropical water resources will use the opportuinity of the Inaugural Lecture to inform the global community of his findings.
He has BSc and MSc degrees in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and a DMA in Marine Affairs from Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS Canada. He obtained his PhD in Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Management at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. Prof Akegbejo-Samsons’ primary research interest is in Fisheries/Aquaculture Development and Coastal Resources Management. He has over sixty publications in various areas of Fisheries Management, Fish/Aquaculture Nutrition, Pond Water Management and Coastal/Wetland Management and Coastal Resources Management. He has held many top level positions in the academia such as the Dean, Student Affairs Division and University Representative at the TUNING AFRICA PROJECT, ajoint Africa, AU/ EU Strategy Tuning program for Higher Education and Capacity Development in African Universities (2011-2017).He is an Ambassador of the International Ocean Institute (IOI) Malta.
Prof Akegbejo, a Comrade of the University of Ibadan extraction having served as the Public Relations Officer of UI Students Union is also a former Dean, Student Affairs Division of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. His competences ranging from leadership and networking, excellent communication and excellent writing and reading abilities make him thick.
The proud Ondo state son had successfully acted as the Major Supervisor of 6 Doctor of Philosophy Graduate thesis and co-supervisor for 12 Doctor of Philosophy Theses, supervised over 20 Masters Degree Dissertations and over 60 undergraduate research projects.
Come May 10, 2023, the 1982 graduate of the University of Ibadan will combine the elements of an erudite scholar, a Comrade , a Pastor, an environmentalist , an excellent communicator , a writer and a leader to thrill his physical audience and global community and hopefully the rescue mission shall provide the necessary succour that the coastal environment of Nigeria needs.
