Shock and grief have swept through the French football community following reports that young footballer Kenzo Kies has been declared brain dead after a tragic drowning incident in the Rhône River near Lyon, France. The heartbreaking development has prompted renewed concerns over water safety during Europe’s ongoing heatwave.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the 21 year old footballer was among four people caught in a powerful current near the Feyssine falls on Monday evening. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time after reports that swimmers had been swept away by the strong waters.
According to local reports, two individuals managed to escape the current without requiring medical treatment, while another person was rescued, resuscitated, and transported to hospital in a stable condition. Kies, however, could not initially be located despite an extensive search operation. Divers later recovered him from the water and emergency responders attempted resuscitation before he was taken to hospital, where doctors subsequently declared him brain dead.
ValidViewNetwork reports that an investigation has been opened by authorities in Lyon to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The tragedy occurred amid exceptionally high temperatures across parts of Europe, with many people seeking relief from the heat in rivers and other natural waterways.
Kies began his football journey with youth teams at Lyon before later moving to Saint Étienne. Following the expiration of his contract last summer, he joined the reserve team of Ligue 2 club En Avant Guingamp, where he continued to pursue his professional football ambitions.
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari used the incident to issue a public warning about the dangers of swimming in unsupervised areas during heatwaves. She noted that numerous drowning incidents had already been recorded in recent days and urged the public to adhere to safety guidance and swim only in supervised locations.
The news has triggered an outpouring of sympathy from teammates, supporters, and members of the wider football community. Tributes have continued to emerge as many struggle to come to terms with the fate of a promising young athlete whose career appeared to be just beginning, ValidViewNetwork reports.
As investigations continue and loved ones await further developments, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the hidden dangers that can exist in natural waterways, particularly during extreme weather conditions, while the football world unites in mourning for a young player whose future held immense promise.
