ABUJA — The Nigerian political landscape, particularly in Delta State, was thrown into mourning following the sudden passing of the former Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi.
Nwaoboshi, a heavyweight in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former stalwart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), reportedly breathed his last on Friday, December 19, 2025, in Abuja. Initial reports indicate the 68-year-old lawmaker passed away following a brief illness, marking the end of a colorful and often tumultuous political career.
A Monumental Loss to the Anioma Nation
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, in a swift reaction, described the Senator’s death as a “monumental loss” to the state and the nation. In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the Governor hailed Nwaoboshi as a “fearless advocate” of the Anioma cause.
”On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I mourn the passing of my dear friend,” the Governor stated. “Senator Nwaoboshi’s contributions to nation-building and his tenure as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs will remain indelible.”

A Career of Influence and Controversy
Senator Nwaoboshi was a titan of Delta politics long before he arrived at the National Assembly in 2015. He served as the Delta State Chairman of the PDP for two terms, steering the party through critical transitions before his own elevation to the Senate.
In the 9th Senate, he was a vocal advocate for the development of the oil-rich Niger Delta. However, his career was not without its share of legal battles. In 2023, the Supreme Court famously quashed a conviction and seven-year prison sentence previously handed to him, ordering his immediate release—a move that restored his political standing and allowed him to rejoin the APC fold.
Tributes Pour In
Across the political divide, colleagues and associates have begun paying tribute to the man many called “the Oracle.” From his roots in Ibusa to the halls of the National Assembly, he was known for his strategic brilliance and unwavering loyalty to his political family.
