The Federal Government has for the second consecutive year left out the traditional military parade from Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.
The omission was noticed during Thursday’s 66th Independence Anniversary activities under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The military parade has historically formed part of Nigeria’s public Independence Day ceremonies, featuring personnel from the Armed Forces and other security formations.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the absence of the parade in 2026 follows a similar decision in 2025, making it the second consecutive Independence anniversary under the Tinubu administration without the traditional military display.
INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION CONTINUES
Despite the omission, Nigeria’s Independence Day was marked with the President’s national broadcast and other anniversary activities.
Tinubu’s 2026 address focused heavily on the country’s economic reforms, social programmes, national development and the transition he described as moving from an “age of reform” to an “age of prosperity”.
The President also paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces and security services who serve in dangerous conditions.
The omission of the parade does not mean that the Armed Forces were absent from the national commemoration, but it represents a change in the format traditionally associated with the anniversary.
NO MILITARY PARADE FOR SECOND YEAR
The Federal Government has not publicly framed the decision as an abandonment of the Independence Day celebration itself.Instead, the anniversary has continued through official addresses and other programmes.
The development has nevertheless drawn public attention because the military parade has long been one of the most recognisable features of Nigeria’s Independence Day ceremonies.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the 2026 celebration therefore marks another year in which the government has chosen an Independence Day format without the traditional military parade.”
