The Federal Government has moved swiftly against the management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), after raising concerns over the appointment of 24 aides by the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ikechukwu Nosike Simplicius Dozie.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the Federal Ministry of Education has directed Professor Ikechukwu Nosike Simplicius Dozie to immediately withdraw the appointments, citing alleged violations of established regulations, due process, and administrative procedures governing federal universities in Nigeria.
The directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, through an official correspondence dated June 25, 2026. The letter, signed by Acting Director of University Education, Dr. Kareem O. L., on behalf of the minister, reportedly followed a review of a university memorandum referenced FUT/REG/CR/CIR/4 dated June 22, 2026.
According to the ministry, the appointments did not comply with extant rules guiding appointments within the Federal University System. The government consequently ordered the immediate reversal of the appointments and demanded evidence of compliance from the university authorities.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the ministry described the appointments as irregular after examining both the process and circumstances surrounding the exercise.
In the official communication, the ministry stated that the appointments were, “as presently constituted, are irregular and are at variance with the extant regulations, established procedures, and the principles of due process governing appointments within the Federal University System.”
The Federal Government further instructed the Vice Chancellor to withdraw the memorandum “forthwith” and provide documentary evidence confirming compliance with the directive.
Beyond the withdrawal order, Professor Ikechukwu Nosike Simplicius Dozie has also been summoned to Abuja for a meeting with officials of the Federal Ministry of Education on June 29, 2026, where the matter and other issues relating to university administration are expected to be discussed, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Professor Ikechukwu Nosike Simplicius Dozie only recently assumed office as the 9th substantive Vice Chancellor of FUTO, succeeding Professor Nnenna Oti. Before his appointment, he served as Vice Chancellor of Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University.
The development has attracted significant attention within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, with stakeholders closely monitoring the outcome of the ministry’s intervention, ValidViewNetwork reports.
As scrutiny intensifies around leadership decisions in higher institutions, the FUTO case is emerging as a major test of compliance, institutional accountability, and adherence to due process within the nation’s university system, reinforcing the Federal Government’s determination to uphold established regulations regardless of status or office.
