FG begins crackdown on exam malpractices

The Federal Ministry of Education has commenced a nationwide monitoring and evaluation campaign aimed at eradicating ‘miracle centres’—schools that facilitate exam malpractice.

During an on-the-spot assessment visit to Redeemer Teap International School in Abuja on Tuesday, Team Lead Rukayat Ibrahim emphasised that the initiative seeks to ensure that schools adhere to ethical examination practices.

This initiative follows a similar assessment conducted in 2007, which led to the blacklisting of culpable institutions and the dismantling of miracle centres.

As a result, the period between 2008 and 2010 was regarded as one of the most ethics-driven examination eras in Nigeria.

Ibrahim, a Deputy Director at the Federal Education Quality Assurance Service, reiterated the ministry’s determination to eliminate such unethical practices nationwide.

“This is a nationwide assessment being conducted simultaneously across all states and the Federal Capital Territory. Unlike previous years when monitoring lasted two to three days, this new on-the-spot assessment allows us to evaluate a school within three hours,” she explained.

She noted that this efficiency enables the ministry to cover more schools and promptly report findings to the management for swift action. The termly evaluation aims to enhance the quality of education in primary and secondary schools across Nigeria.

Yinka Amodu, another official from the FEQAS department, stressed the importance of consistent evaluation to keep schools accountable. He clarified that both private and public schools—including creches and early childhood education centres—are subject to scrutiny.

“In 2007, our assessments exposed ‘kangaroo schools’ that operated without registration, employed unqualified teachers and lacked adequate infrastructure. Some of these schools functioned in dilapidated buildings. Regular evaluations ensure that such institutions are identified and necessary actions are taken. Without checks and balances, our education system cannot progress,” Amodu asserted.

In response, the Principal of Redeemer Teap International School, Oladimeji Yusuf, pledged to address areas of improvement highlighted by the assessment team. He also assured that adequate facilities would be provided to enhance learning and teaching experiences.

The ministry’s assessment criteria include skills development, conducive learning environments, adequate classroom space, well-equipped laboratories, ICT facilities, health clinics, and proper perimeter fencing, among others.
