ABUJA — Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have rescued a middle-aged man, Bashir Usman, from being lynched by an angry mob over an alleged attempt to abduct a five-year-old child in the Kuje Area Council.
The incident, which took place on Sunday, October 4, 2026, around 2:46 PM at Angwan Lado, drew widespread tension as residents descended on the suspect in front of the victim’s residence.
According to a statement released by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, a distress call alerted the Kuje Division about the unfolding violence. Swift intervention by officers prevented what could have been a fatal case of jungle justice, securing the suspect into protective custody.
Reacting to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, strongly condemned the resort to self-help by members of the public. He emphasized that engaging in jungle justice is a severe criminal offense that is tantamount to murder under the law, warning that it obstructs the proper course of judicial investigations.
Police authorities confirmed that the investigation has been expanded to uncover the full scope of the suspect’s activities and track down potential accomplices. Meanwhile, parents and guardians have been charged to maintain heightened vigilance over the safety and well-being of their wards.
The Command urged residents to channel suspicious activities through the nearest police station or via its emergency hotlines: 08028940883 and 08032003913.
