IBADAN, OYO STATE — The Nigerian gospel music community and beyond mourned yesterday as beloved singer Bolaji Adedotun Olanrewaju, popularly known as Big Bolaji, was laid to rest in Ibadan, Oyo State. The prolific artiste, who passed away on April 19 at the age of 50 after a brief illness, was given a final farewell steeped in tributes and emotional goodbyes.
The final rites commenced on Wednesday with a poignant funeral service and lying-in-state ceremony at the prestigious Hall of Grace, Jogor Centre in Ibadan. The venue was filled with family members, friends, and a host of prominent gospel ministers, including Tosin Bee, Mike Abdul, Bidemi Olaoba, Yetunde Are, and comedian Woli Agba, all gathered to pay their respects to a man who touched countless lives through his music and ministry.
Emotional scenes resonated across social media as footage showed pallbearers carefully carrying Big Bolaji’s flower-adorned casket into the venue. Mourners, visibly heartbroken, included his grieving family and a wide array of colleagues who shared a deep connection with the late singer. A touching tribute video, celebrating his impactful life and rich musical legacy, was played, eliciting tears and fond memories from those present.
Following the service, the solemn burial procession proceeded to the All Souls Private Cemetery in Ido, Ibadan. There, under the watchful eyes of his devoted wife, siblings, and other cherished loved ones, Big Bolaji was finally laid to rest, concluding a journey of faith and melodies.
The burial in Ibadan marked the culmination of several events held in his honor. A “Night of Praise and Tribute” took place on May 18 in London, demonstrating his international reach and impact. This was followed by a “Celebration of Life” on May 26 in Lagos, and a “Service of Songs” on May 27, also in Ibadan, preceding the final interment. These gatherings provided opportunities for his vast network of admirers to collectively grieve and celebrate his life.

Beyond his captivating voice and soul-stirring gospel performances, Big Bolaji was also an ordained minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), where he faithfully served for over 19 years. He was widely recognized for his annual concert, ‘Turnitup With Big Bolaji,’ an eagerly anticipated event that brought together gospel music enthusiasts in Ibadan and beyond.
Big Bolaji is survived by his wife and two children, who now carry on his legacy. His passing leaves a significant void in the gospel music industry, but his music and the countless lives he impacted will undoubtedly continue to resonate for generations to come.
