Abuja, Nigeria – Social media giant Facebook has reportedly disabled the account of prominent Nigerian activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore. The move has ignited a fresh wave of discussion online, particularly given some individuals’ past labeling of Sowore as a “blackmailer-in-chief.”
Details surrounding the precise reason for the account’s deactivation remain unclear as of press time. Neither Facebook nor Sowore has issued an official statement clarifying the situation. Efforts to reach Sowore for comment were unsuccessful.
Omoyele Sowore, a vocal critic of successive Nigerian governments, has a significant online presence, particularly through his news platform Sahara Reporters, known for its often-controversial and investigative reports. He has been a prominent figure in Nigerian civil rights movements and has, at times, faced legal challenges and arrests related to his activism.
The moniker “blackmailer-in-chief” has been used by some of Sowore’s detractors, particularly in connection with allegations surrounding some of Sahara Reporters’ publications, which have been accused of being used to pressure or extort individuals. However, Sowore and his supporters have consistently denied such claims, asserting that his platform’s work is driven by a commitment to public accountability and anti-corruption.
The disabling of a prominent voice’s social media account by a platform as influential as Facebook invariably raises questions about freedom of expression, platform policies, and the power wielded by tech companies in shaping public discourse. It remains to be seen whether Facebook will offer a detailed explanation for its decision or if Sowore will be able to regain access to his account.
