Valid View Network Provides Eye Safety Tips for Digital Device Use

In a recent article, Valid View Network highlighted important safety tips for maintaining eye health while using digital devices.

Journalists and individuals alike are frequently exposed to blue light emitted by digital devices such as phones, tablets, and computers. This exposure has been associated with potential long-term effects on eye health, including vision issues in old age or premature eye defects.

Blue light, with its shorter wavelengths, is a component of the visible light spectrum. While exposure to natural sunlight during the day can boost mood and alertness, excessive exposure to blue light from screens in the evening can disrupt our sleep cycle.

Digital-related eye strain affects people of all ages. Extended periods of digital device use can lead to symptoms like blurred vision, eye fatigue, dryness, and irritation. These symptoms are similar to those experienced during prolonged reading or close work such as sewing.

There have been studies examining the effects of blue light on cells in a controlled setting, but findings do not conclusively mimic natural conditions of blue light exposure to human eyes.

Currently, there is no substantial evidence linking blue light to retinal damage or age-related macular degeneration in humans. However, the extent of device usage does impact eye health.

Eyeglasses equipped with blue light-blocking filters claim to improve sleep, reduce digital eye strain, and prevent eye diseases. However, investing in these glasses is optional for computer users.

It’s important to note that blue light from computers is unlikely to cause eye disease. While excessive exposure to blue light and ultraviolet rays from the sun can increase the risk of eye disease, the amount of blue light emitted by computer screens is not considered harmful to the eyes.

Improving sleep can be achieved without special eyeglasses. Simply reducing evening screen time and setting devices to night mode can promote better sleep.

Digital eye strain is primarily attributed to how we use devices, rather than the blue light itself. Symptoms such as dry eyes, blurry vision, and headaches are linked to prolonged screen use.

Rochester Optical, a United States-based optical clinic, highlights the following effects of digital devices on eye health:

  • Straining Your Eyes: Extended periods of focusing on screens can cause eye fatigue, discomfort, and blurred vision.
  • Blue Light Exposure: Prolonged exposure to blue light may disrupt sleep patterns and potentially contribute to retinal damage.
  • Reduced Blinking and Dry Eyes: Staring at screens reduces blinking, leading to dry and irritated eyes.
  • Increased Myopia Rates: Excessive screen time can contribute to myopia in children and young adults.

To prevent digital-related eye strain, experts recommend:

  • Frequent Blinking: Make a conscious effort to blink regularly while using digital devices.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Take breaks every 20 minutes and focus on an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Use Artificial Tears: Keep eyes refreshed with artificial tears if they feel dry.
  • Adjust Screen Settings: Use night or dark mode settings in the evening to reduce screen brightness.
  • Take Breaks: Schedule regular breaks from screen time to reduce eye strain.

Maintaining proper ergonomics while using digital devices is crucial in preventing eye-related discomfort. By adjusting screen height and position, using ergonomic accessories, and investing in ergonomic furniture, individuals can minimize eye strain and maintain overall comfort.

Consulting with an eye doctor regularly is recommended to identify and address potential eye health issues promptly.

Additionally, using blue light filtering glasses or screen protectors can help reduce the harmful effects of blue light and promote healthier eyesight.

Remember, protecting your eyes requires more than just addressing blue light exposure. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, scheduling routine eye exams, and practicing good screen habits are essential for maintaining optimal eye health while using digital devices.

By following these tips, individuals can keep their eyes comfortable and healthy in the digital age.
