
The Nigerian Army has reported that an explosion and subsequent fire outbreak at Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, occurred early Thursday morning, August 14, 2025. The incident took place within one of the storage buildings belonging to the 42nd Engineers Brigade Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.
According to a statement from the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, the explosion triggered a localized fire which was quickly brought under control through the combined efforts of troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service. The prompt response ensured no loss of life or injuries, with structural damage confined only to the affected storage building and some materials stored within it.
Anele emphasized that a detailed assessment is ongoing to fully ascertain the extent of the material damage. She also urged residents of Ilese and neighboring communities to remain calm and continue with their normal activities.
The Nigerian Army has initiated a thorough investigation in collaboration with relevant agencies to determine the precise cause of the explosion and prevent any such future occurrences.
