Ex-‘Idol’ Star Barba Busted in Target Shoplifting Case

Former American Idol contestant Antonella Barba has added a new chapter to her mounting legal troubles following an arrest for allegedly shoplifting from a New Jersey department store.

Barba, 39, who reached the Top 16 on the reality competition’s sixth season in 2007, was taken into custody on August 10 after authorities responded to a Target located in the Seaview Square Shopping Center in Ocean Township. According to local police, loss-prevention personnel flagged suspicious behavior after observing Barba repeatedly moving between fitting rooms and a restroom while concealing merchandise in a bag.

Officers intercepted the former singer as she exited the building, reportedly recovering the hidden items—valued at under $200—from her carrier. Barba has formally entered a plea of not guilty and is scheduled to face the Ocean Township Municipal Court on November 18.

The misdemeanor-level shoplifting charge compounds an already fragile legal standing for the former reality personality, who is navigating a complex web of prior convictions and probation issues. Court history shows Barba previously faced a shoplifting citation in Manhattan in 2010 for allegedly stealing a pair of gloves from Urban Outfitters, which resulted in a sentence of a single day of community service.

Those minor infractions escalated sharply years later. In 2018, Barba was arrested in Virginia on federal drug charges. She later pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl, a high-profile case that yielded a 45-month prison sentence. After completing her federal prison term in 2021, she began a mandatory five-year period of supervised release.

That post-release oversight has faced continuous strain. In March 2025, Barba was arrested in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, on a domestic violence charge involving a former partner, triggering a probation violation and a subsequent stint on home detention. Federal authorities also noted a separate supervision violation earlier this summer.

Legal analysts note that while the New Jersey Target incident carries a relatively low financial threshold, the municipal offense could potentially prompt federal probation officials to weigh stricter revocation proceedings as her November court date approaches. Representatives for Barba have not publicly commented on the ongoing proceedings.
