RIJEKA, Croatia — England delivered a breathtaking statement of intent on Saturday evening, running riot in a 7-0 demolition of Croatia in UEFA Nations League Group 3.
Under the tactical guidance of manager Thomas Tuchel, the Three Lions produced the most emphatic victory of his tenure thus far, tearing apart an abject Croatian side at the Stadion HNK Rijeka.
A Record-Breaking Night on the Adriatic
Captain Harry Kane led the charge with a clinical brace, extending his all-time record goal tally for the national team to 89. The Bayern Munich striker was ably matched by Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka, who also bagged two goals in a mesmerizing display of attacking football.
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham orchestrating the contest from the center of the pitch proved equally vital. Bellingham capped off a vibrant performance by finding the back of the net himself while contributing three stellar assists.
Anthony Gordon continued his remarkable international form by netting his fourth goal in his last four matches for England, before substitute Morgan Rogers sealed the rout with an 87th-minute strike.
Clinical Efficiency From the First Whistle
The fixture, played behind closed doors due to previous fan sanctions involving Croatia, unfolded in a subdued environment attended by only 6,000 local schoolchildren and a small contingent of traveling fans. Despite the lack of a traditional atmosphere, England showed no signs of complacency following manager Tuchel’s pre-match warnings against slipping into “holiday mode” after the squad’s relaxation by the Adriatic Sea earlier in the week.
It took the visitors just eight minutes to break the deadlock. Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott—earning his maiden start for England—launched a fluid counter-attack, feeding Bellingham, who slipped a precise ball behind a flat-footed defense for Kane to finish clinically from 10 yards out.
England doubled their lead in the 21st minute following a magnificent 27-pass sequence. Saka’s cross found Gordon, who cleverly recycled the ball in mid-air back across the six-yard box for Bellingham to poke home.
Gordon added the third just before halftime, diving to meet a pinpoint cross from Jarell Quansah with an agile header. Just before the interval, Bellingham baffled veteran midfielder Luka Modric with a smooth drag-back before setting up Saka for England’s fourth.
Maintaining Intensity After the Break
Rather than sitting on their commanding lead, the Three Lions showed no mercy in the second half. Kane grabbed his second and England’s fifth in the 53rd minute by sliding in to convert a cross, while Saka capitalized on a defensive error to secure his brace in the 68th minute.
Rogers capped the historic victory late in the game, rounding the goalkeeper after collecting yet another assist from the irresistible Bellingham.
Looking Ahead
With this commanding triumph firmly in the books, Tuchel’s squad turns its focus toward the conclusion of the international break. England will face the Czech Republic at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday, aiming to secure a top-two finish ahead of the Nations League quarter-finals scheduled for March.
